Colman Architects was invited to take part in a limited competition to provide 190,000 sq m of residential (80%) and commercial (20%) uses on a 51,000 sq m site. The challenge was to provide sufficient space at ground level and to create a unique environment for the residents.
The buildings do not conform to the grid of the neighbouring site but their orientation responds both to curved ground level commercial area takes advantage of the sunlight to the south. In China there exists a need to create many homes for millions of people moving into the cities from the surrounding countryside. The challenge will continue to create unique spaces that have individual character and are at a human scale. It is far too easy, as can be seen in some of the other neighbouring developments, to give little thought to the human aspect of these large developments.
