Completion Date: April 2017
Client: Benson Elliot Capital Management LLP
Project Team: Chris Corner
This major redevelopment in the heart of Wolverhampton saw the introduction of a brand new 90,000 sq./ft Debenhams, reconfigured retail units on the lower and upper mall and full refurbishment and redesign of the malls.
Following the demolition of a large portion of the existing shopping centre, Colman Architects have created a new, elegant and efficient 3 storey retail unit for Debenhams in the Mander Centre. Large, glazed openings create attractive entrances on all three levels with sleek brick and sophisticated panelling to the external facades.
The public malls and circulation were refurbished to provide slim, glazed bridges and a new, modern circulation core which has improved access and visitor movement through the centre whilst also creating long views across the malls of the retailers. The project also saw the introduction of a new, double height atrium roof which creates an impressive, light filled frontage to Debenhams.
Further assessment of the existing centre necessitated the reconfiguration of existing retail units to accommodate future retail needs. Tenants including H&M and Superdrug now occupy these larger, simplified units adding extra activity to the now rejuvenated malls.
